I Hate My Mac Part 2

Late last year I wrote a little post about why I hate my Mac. While I still hate my Mac because it’s still really uncomfortable to write on, I’m beginning to RESENT my Mac.

I resent it because I spent over $1K on it and it was like flushing that money down the toilet. I still prefer my Dell laptop to the Mac just because of the full size keyboard. What can I say? I have large stubby fingers and no grace whatsoever.

Also – all my writing programs are now currently on my Dell. I can’t talk myself into shelling out another several hundred dollars just to make the Mac useful to me. Even then, with a better laptop available, I can only see using the Mac as a backup machine.

Meanwhile – while I’m using a laptop that is a few years old, it has the latest and greatest upgrades and I’m absolutely terrified that my Mac will soon be outdated and I’ll end up having to get rid of it anyway, without really using it for much else than uploading files to the iBookstore.

So I guess I’m feeling a bit anxious. I’m resentful that I had to buy a Mac to distribute to Apple the easy way. I’m resentful that the iBookstore only allows censored versions of my books (they have a fuck-counter ladies and gents, so if you like your books clean you’re in luck, however if you thought you were getting uncensored books, you’re wrong).  I’m resentful that I can’t use my Mac for anything other than uploading to the iBookstore and that I’m not getting my money out of it!

I’m resentful that so many writers will only use Mac and praise it like it’s the beginning and end all of all computing and if you’re not using a Mac, you are treated like a “lesser” writer in certain writing circles.

Let me just say that if you believe Apple is, in any ways superior to any other computer for simple word processing, you don’t get out much. I’m resentful that a lot of the good writing software is only available for Mac. Luckily Scrivener has a Windows version and that’s the version I use, especially since I don’t see myself getting another Mac anytime soon. But now I can’t get Scrapple for my good laptop. I’d have to get it on my Mac and it’s just not worth it to have my idea mapping software on the computer I never use.

It’s still the most over-rated laptop I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned numerous laptops over the years. Did I mention that back in the 90’s I had one of the first Mac laptops? Yeah, I gave the damn thing away because it was WAY over-rated. Plus it crashed on me a few times. Honestly, if I didn’t need my current Mac to distribute to iBookstore, I’d likely sell it.

I’m just so disgusted. I guess I need to FIND a way to make this machine more useful than it is, so I’ll stop feeling so resentful for being extorted out of $1K by Apple for a rather unremarkable laptop that is uncomfortable to use. It’s been a year and I think I’ve turned the Mac on less than 20 times during that time.

(And yes, I could have just distributed to Apple through Smashwords, but the way I do it is easier and the Smashwords style guide is just too tedious to deal with.  I have writing to do.)
