Things Worth Doing

Things worth doing are worth doing right.

This is something a lot of us  probably remember our parents or grandparents telling us when we were growing up. Becoming good at something takes time. It takes practice.

Skills for seeing (i.e. divination) are no different. Earlier this week I was approached by a client who was very impressed with my talents. She told me she wanted to learn to speak with the Daemonic Divine like I did.  I told her to calm her mind and listen. I also suggested she practice nightly meditation where she said the enn of the Daemon she wanted to speak to while falling asleep to see if she was able to do dream divination. She wrote back several days later saying she’d tried it for two nights and it wasn’t working.

I rolled my eyes at first because two nights is really not enough time to give something the good old college try. But I bit my tongue and instead asked her what she was expecting because I often find that when some people think of speaking with Daemons, they’re thinking Hollywood sorcery where the Daemon appears, physically, in front of them and starts chatting away (usually in an ominous baritone).

Her response was that she wanted to be able to hear them, just like me.  I explained to her that I heard them in my minds eye. It wasn’t like hearing voices, it was a combination of thoughts and words with both visual and auditory cues. It’s really hard to explain a mediumship ability to those who don’t possess it because I’m not always sure people understand what I mean when I say mind’s-eye.

I also asked her how long she’d been practicing. She told me she was my age and had been practicing since her late 20’s. She also told me she was an earth sign and she described her daily practice to me which seemed more book reading heavy than actually doing. However, her meditation practice sounded solid.

So I suggested to her it was possible that maybe she just didn’t have a talent for it. Or that her expectations were too high. Or that she was grounding herself, which usually happens when you introduce an earthy person to a spirit board. She immediately wrote back and told me that she knew she had an ability because she saw the Daemonic all the time.

I went through and suggested a pendulum and other divination devices that might help her. I also explained gently that it took me a lot of years to get my ability to where it is (28 to be exact).

That’s when she wrote back and told me she was giving up. Her approximate 10-12 years of practice became 15 (so I wonder how long she’d really been practicing) and she said she’d tried everything I’d suggested and it just didn’t work for her. This is where I started wondering if she was telling the truth. No one works for fifteen years and gets no results. I’m sorry. No one. Not unless you don’t have an empathic bone in your body and you’re so damn stubborn you don’t give up. I think people like that are rare. I think everyone has some ability to some degree, even if it’s just a strong gut feeling.

I almost jumped in and asked her if she expected it to happen over night, which is how she sounded. Obviously something kept her going for so long, otherwise, why would she suddenly give up fifteen years of work after a few failed tries at Dream Divination. My only explanation is that this person hasn’t put in the effort and was hoping I had a magick pill, formula, or instant gratification spell that would magickally give her the ability I’d worked 28 years to hone, not to mention I was born with it, so I’ve had the ability for 40 years!

Of course that’s also when it hit me she might be Clairvoyant, which would explain the lack of  Clairaudience and Clairsentience and all the failed attempts at using other divination devices. As a last ditch effort to help this person,  even though at this point I was pretty sure she was wanting something fast and easy, I suggested skrying might be her cup of tea. After all,  if what she said was true, she sees Daemons far more frequently than most Daemonolaters I know. Actually there’s only one Daemonolater I know who sees Daemons that frequently and she has no problems communicating with them whatsoever.

I do not know how my client is doing just yet, but I make a prediction that she shows back up in my email with the complaint that the skrying mirror was a flop, too. After all, three days should do it, right?

With these kinds of personalities, I often like to take things OUT of the occult arena. With her, I think the first thing I would be saying is “Success is 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration. Success is failing 99 times out of a hundred, so that you can eventually find your way to that 1 time that succeeds. In the occult arena, you can multiply that by say, 2, or 3, or fuckin’ 40. If you can’t fail, and fail, and fail, and fail again, but then begin to see little glimmers of success in each failure, until you DO succeed, then occult study is most likely not for you. (In my opinion)

Now, 4000 years ago when Mankind was actually spiritual, and not religious, maybe these kind of expected results can manifest in like you say, 3 days time. Now however, I’m not thinking so.
