Vacation Dreaming…

And this time not really dreaming of anything special or tropical. No – instead I’m thinking I’d like to take a few weeks and get some stuff done around the house. My office, once again, is in a pitiful state. My corner of the bedroom is a mess. I need to clean the closets (we have too many blankets). I want to replace all our old towels. DH and I seem to have a lot of duplicate items, too.  See, getting married when your older has the unfortunate side effect of causing you to end up with two sets of just about everything.  That included dishes, pots and pans, appliances (at one point we had three Mr. Coffee’s), towels, blankets, etc… Some of it we kept around just because it’s nice to have spares when stuff wears out. Some we gave away to family members or gave to charity. Other things I have NO idea why we’re keeping them. Especially if we’ve already replaced said thing(s) with something newer that both of us picked out. Like the comforter for the bed. And yet I still have several sets of comforters for twin beds. Perhaps my sister can use them for the kids. I also own 3-4 crocheted blankets (quite lovely) made by an old family friend who died several years back. I really only need one. The others I should pass on to other family members who would have gotten blankets had Irene lived long enough to make them.  I think I ended up with four of them because my grandma (who kept having Irene make me the blankets) loved me very much and kept giving me blankets (this was years before she passed). Right now these blankets are in linen bags in the basement.

Other bizarre things that might have to go…. nick knacks and doodads that have been packed away for years collecting dust and wasting much needed space. Sure, some of them are special and hold sentimental value. But those that don’t – depending what they are – are either going into a box for a yard sale or going to the Goodwill.  Another thorn in my side — books! It’s that time of decade again where I prune my bookshelves and get rid of those books I will never read again in a million years (not even if you paid me).  I’ll just donate those. But of course these seemingly little chores are actually big chores in disguise. Hence the reason I need to to take a few weeks and just deal with it. It will make me feel better and more organized.

I had originally considered doing this in October, but learned earlier today that won’t be doable due to a conflict in family schedules. So instead I might take the first few weeks of November off from both writing and the day job (that will be but part time come January – yay!).

Here’s to cleaning! ::raises a glass of wine to you all::
